World Cup 2026, Yorkshire Style

There’s something about the World Cup that brings everyone together. The snacks come out, the group chats go wild and suddenly we’re all part-time managers shouting instructions at the television like the players can actually hear us.

But here in Yorkshire, we tend to say things a little differently.

Forget the dramatic commentary and over-the-top reactions, Yorkshire football fans have their own way of watching the game, usually involving a bit of sarcasm, plenty of passion and the occasional phrase that nobody outside the county fully understands.

So, ahead of the upcoming World Cup, we thought we’d put together a few PC classic Yorkshire alternatives to the things you’ll probably be shouting at the TV this summer…

Footballing Terms Yorkshire Style

  1. “Shoot!”

Yorkshire version:

“Tha’s not brought boots for nowt!”

Perfect for when a player takes one touch too many instead of having a go.

  1. “Come on Ref!”

Yorkshire version:

“Ref wants specs, tha does.”

Usually followed by a dramatic sigh and reaching for another crisp.

  1. “How did he miss that?”

Yorkshire version:

“He couldn’t hit barn door from five yards!”

A timeless Yorkshire football classic.

  1. “That was close!”

Yorkshire version:

“By ‘eck, me heart can’t tek this.”

Best used during penalties or added time.

  1. “What a goal!”

Yorkshire version:

“Now tha’s talking!”

Usually accompanied by leaping off the sofa and spilling beer (or tea) everywhere.

  1. “Come on England!”

Yorkshire version:

“Right then lads, let’s av it.”

Simple. Effective. Proper Yorkshire encouragement.

Whether you’re hosting friends for the big match, balancing plates of picky bits on the sofa or turning your living room into your own mini fan zone, the World Cup is all about bringing people together. And here in Yorkshire, it wouldn’t quite be the same without plenty of passion, dramatic reactions and a few classic Yorkshire phrases being shouted at the TV along the way.
